Boston LUNA Chix Running Team

I run because... it gives me a chance to set goals and push myself while still being part of a larger running community. There’s a sense of camaraderie even though running is such an individual activity. Plus, it gives me the chance to be a lunatic – to push myself and burn off all that energy and stress. I’d probably drive everyone nuts without that outlet.

Place to run: around the Charles or Jamaica
Pond – those little runner/biker hide-aways
from the crazy city traffic.
Time of Day to run: Mid-afternoon is ideal
however I really don’t get to run then during
the week so I run in the evening.
Race: Reach the Beach Relay
Pre-Race Meal: a bowl of cereal and/or a
banana
Music to listen to while running: I usually
don’t listen to music when I run, but when I do it’
s usually an eclectic mix – sometimes a radio
station. I like being surprised by what song is
next.
Running Shoes: Nike Althea
Since high school I’ve been a big fan of track and field and
running events. I managed the track teams in high school,
and volunteered with the BAA ½ marathon and Boston
Marathon a few times. However, I only started running on a
regular basis in college, and didn’t run in my first race (a 5k)
until fall 2004. In 2004 and 2005, I ran a few races that were
less than 5 miles.
In 2006, I began training to complete a longer-distance run.
The weekly Luna Chix runs were a great motivating factor
and the support of the women who run with the group really
propelled me throughout the year.
I ran my first 10k in July 2006 – Ryka Iron Girl in Quincy, MA,
and completed my first half-marathon in October with the BAA
event. The latter was a huge accomplishment for me after
volunteering with the event for several years (and always
saying “Maybe next year I’ll run it”). I also took part in the
Reach the Beach Relay, a 200+ mile relay race across New
Hampshire, in September. Running as the 12th leg of our 12-
person team, I completed 15.5 miles broken down into 3
segments over a 24-hour period.
